if  aboy 10 years old ,swallowed a coin???

Ileocecal junction is wider than esophagogastric junction.

usually the coin stays at the level of cricopharyngeus level because it is the narrowest part. if this is not severely adhered then it can be removed by oesophagoscopy otherwise we can also use a foleys catheter and remove it by traction. usually coin can be removed by these techniques and if it is in distal elimentry tract then we used to ask patient to take banana, butter or ghee and milk and coin used to out in excreta. if it does not come out then needs surgery.

 

If  child has no problem in breathing and not coughing then wait for 24 or 48 hours to see if the coin passes into his stool means coin passes into his stomach. But be alert at this time. May be your child do not need any surgery if coin easily passed into his stool.

But if he having problem in breathing then may be the coin has become stuck in his esophagus. At this time you will need medical assistance. Doctor will do X-Ray and can remove the coin by using endoscope. It is very rare case that your child need a surgery.
